Two-day Rottnest Channel swim being considered for 2015

7th January 2014

PERTH’S Rottnest Channel Swim is set for a major overhaul, after a record number of applicants were turned away from the 2014 event.

The world’s largest open water swim will get bigger under a plan to split it over two days or two concurrent races.

Rottnest Channel Swim Association president David Corney said a second starting line, in addition to the traditional Cottesloe Beach starting point, was the most favoured option.

The number of competitors who can take part in the 19.7km HBF Rottnest Channel Swim each year is determined by how many solo swimmers enter the race.

This year 274 are competing. More

Captains October Report

28th October 2013

Hi Swimmers,

We have some exiting news as the club has decided to introduce 2 new awards from 2014 onwards.  Even though the new awards will not be presented until December 2014 the points that can be gained to achieve these awards actually start on November 2nd this week.

The first new award is called “Pool Competition Swimming” and has been introduced to recognise swimmers who swim and represent our club at all the Masters pool competitions in Western Australia like the LiveLighter Club Challenge and Masters Swimming WA Pool State Championships.  We will also include the Masters Swimming Australia National Championships if and when they are held in WA.  Points that will be scored towards this award will be taken from events swum from the 1st November and up to the 31st October the following year, so if you’re interested in seeing how you go the first event coming up is the Beatty Park LiveLighter Club Challenge which is on Sunday the 24th November at Tuart College.

The second new award which has not been named just yet will possibly be called “Club Swimmer of the Year” or something along those lines.  The Male and Female Club Swimmer of the Year will be the club member who achieves the highest overall score in the following 4 categories based on the Club Swimmer of the Year Award Rules.

  • Aerobics
  • Club Championships
  • Open Water Swimming
  • Pool Competition Swimming

We have decided to equalise the points scored in each category by adjusting the top score to 100 and then adjust all other points in that category by the same value.  So if you were the top points scorer in aerobics with 385 points we would divide that figure by 3.85 to give 100 and divide all other scores by 3.85 in that category.  If you were the top points scorer in the Club Championships with 40 points we would divide that score by 0.4 to give 100 and then divide all the other scores in that category by 0.4 and so on for the other 2 categories.  For further explanation of the rules for these new events please feel free to ask me or Graham Hicks at the pool on a Saturday after swimming. Points that will be scored towards this award will be taken from events swum from the 1st November and up to the 31st October the following year, so if you’re interested in seeing how you go the first event is our Club Championships on the 2nd of November followed by Aerobic swims the next day on Sunday the 3rd of November and then Beatty Park LiveLighter Club Challenge which is on Sunday the 24th November at Tuart College.

 Up and Coming Masters Events:

  • Saturday 2nd November.  Club Championships Round 10
  • Sunday 10th November.  Lake Leschenaultia Open Water Swim
  • Sunday 24th November.  Beatty Park Live Lighter Club challenge at Tuart College
  • Saturday 14th December.  Fremantle Ports Swim Thru
